I was traveling for last fortnight so I could not update this blog. But as I was reading local news papers, listening to radio news wherever I was, two news articles have been keeping me thinking.
1. Near Defeat of LTTE in Sri Lanka
2. Pakistan Action Against Taliban in Pakistan
LTTE is one of the oldest and arguably the deadliest terrorist outfit ( freedom struggle for some people) in the world. It had successfully fought Sri Lankan Army for almost 20 years and occupied vast areas where they established their own government. Most probably, no other militant orgnaisation could achieve this before.
With Sri Lankan Army closing in on LTTE, many western countries including India has started putting pressure on Sri Lankan Government for halting operation against LTTE. Sri Lankan government is not listening rightly with a retort, “When LTTE will be back with their suicide bombers in Colombo, only Sri lankan will have to face them, not westerner or Indians”.
The defeat of LTTE may be a turning point of few policies and politics in South East Asia. In India, many people see the defeat of LTTE as triumph and revenge by Sonia Gandhi and Congress on LTTE.
The other important news has been the Pakistani Army action against Taliban. Recently Taliban had been openly challenging Pakistani government’s authority at many areas in Pakistan. Though the Pakistani Army action against Taliban seems to be a result of pressure from USA, but the truth may be completely different. Taliban coming to power in Pakistan with nuclear weapons is a scenario USA, Israel and India can not even think of! But the latest incidences were indicating that Pakistan might be captured by Taliban, either way. So it was very logical for USA and other western power to make right noises making easy for Pakistani government to launch a crack down operation against Taliban.
Pakistani Army is a professional army well equipped to fight against Taliban and defeat them. But fighting against Taliban, whom Pakistani Army might have trained before, may not be a easy job. The same thing happened with Indian Army when it fought against LTTE in 1987 with IPKF. It was disaster and India paid price with death of Rajiv Gandhi. If Taliban is nutralised or defeated, most probably Pakistan too will have to pay a similar price.
But these incidents are significant and important events of the fortnight.
