Recently, ( on Monday, 22 June 2009), President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy said that “Burqa is not welcome in France, because it is not a symbol of religion but a sign of subservience for women”. Opposing Islamic dress code “Burqa” is not new in Europe. British Politician Jack Straw also requested his citizens from his constituency to meet him without Burqa in 2006 creating a media furore. So, one can say controversy about Burqa in Europe is nothing new.

But recent Sorkozy statement has created quite a news again. There has been many arguments and counter arguments for Burqa. Many Muslims also agrees that wearing Burqa is Arab culture and can not be termed as Muslim culture. But many argue that singling out Muslim women for covering their faces while Christian nuns too wear similar dress is “prejudiced”.
Here is the news in Times of India:

VERSAILLES (FRANCE): The burqa is “not welcome” in France because it is not a symbol of religion but a sign of subservience for women, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday.
“We cannot accept to have in our country women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity,” he said. “That is not the idea that the French republic has of women’s dignity.”
“The burqa is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience,” he told lawmakers. “It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic.” Source.
