As per recent report published in The Times, 20,000 civilians killed in recent war between Sri Lankan Army and LTTE which ended in complete defeat of LTTE and death of its chief Prabhakaran. If it is true, I think it is true, after seeing the image gallery posted in The Times website, then LTTE used civilians as human shield and Sri Lankan army just went on killing them in order to defeat and finish off LTTE. The number may be small compared to other historical tolls where millions were killed. But 20000 death in a conflict in Twenty Fri st century, puts a question mark how much human civilisation has progressed! Can a sane person authorise killing of non-combatant civilians ?
LTTE was supposed to be a terrorist organisation, Sri Lankan army is a professional army under a democratically elected government. Still they matched in their brutality with LTTE, that is what is shocking to the world! More shocking is failure of western world as well as civil society against this crime against humanity, both by LTTE and Sri Lankan Army. Sadly, India and China, nearest big power, played politics of influence on Sri Lanka overlooking this human tragedy.
Sri Lanka may rejoice at finishing off LTTE, but the history says, no one could finish off a popular uprising with firepower. LTTE may be finished off as for now, but this killing of 20000 civilians will exact few repercussions from Sri Lanka, in some day, in one way or the other.
