Veteran CPM ( Communist Party, Masxist) leader and longest serving chief minister of India, Jyoti Basu died today in Kolkota at the age of 95 after prolonged illness.

Jytoi Basu was born into a rich and privileged family with education in Loreto, Presidency College in Kolkota and turned a Communist with denouncing India’s independence. He is said to be one of the few who transformed communists a part of Indian parliamentary systems and many contributions.

Indian prime minister, railway minister and almost all political leaders have expressed condolence in his death.

Politics of west bengal as well as communism after his death would be interesting to watch.

Lalgarh is a village in Jhargram subdivision of West Midnapore district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It has been in news recently as it was ‘liberated’ from Indian state by Naxalites last week.

Naxalites claim few areas inside India as “liberated” zone. Dantewara in Chattishgarh of Indian state is a place which Naxalites claim to be “liberated zone”. West Midanpore in West Bengal is one such area which Naxalites claim to be their second “liberated zone”. Lalgarh was brought to national media and got wide publicity and front page coverage due to killing CPM leaders in broad daylight in Bankshole village. Also policemen fled from their Police Station from Lalgarh to escape the fiery onslaught of Naxal cadres.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has called the Maoists the “gravest challenge to India’s security”, told: “The home minister has good ideas and we will take effective action. Its [the Naxalite issue’s] seriousness is fully appreciated and recognised by our government, as per reports.

Now, most probably, many Indians living in cities with malls, broadband connection, IPhone 3Gs may not have realised in India itself, there are pockets of area where Indian state does not exist! Naxalites do not recognise Indian state to be legitimate and do not believe in famed Indian democracy. Most probably, this could a shocking news as we are fed to believe India to the largest democratic country in the world by every print, visual media, day in and day out.

Naxalites control ‘Liberated Zones’ within Indian states, which needs to be occupied back by Indian security forces almost routinely now. After 61 years of so-called independence and 15 elections, the very fact that Indian Security forces needs to mount attacks inside its claimed territory to establish rule of the Indian Government, should be an eye opener to every one what is wrong with India!

Terrorism, cross-border terrorism, Islamic Fundamentalism, Osama, Al Qaida etc. are covered in every media while avoiding the stark truth of Indian state in certain areas! India needs to wake up to it reality as shown by Naxalites and face it to solve the problems. Else it might cut a very sorry figure for India in international stages barring its famed IT, Democracy etc.

Stepping up their attacks, Maoists struck in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa, killing 17 people, including five election officials and ten security personnel, and looted electronic voting machines in a bid to disrupt the first phase of polling for Lok Sabha. Naxalites blew up a vehicle carrying poll officials in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district, killing five of them and injuring two others, police said. Source and complete story here.

Who are Naxalites ?

They are armed groups waging a violent struggle on behalf of landless labourers and tribal people against landlords and others. They are leftist and inspired by Mao and as per them, they are fighting oppression and exploitation to create a classless society.

According to Indian Prime Minister, Naxals or Naxalites poses the biggest internal threat to India. And rightly so, they are active in almost 350 districts out of Indias around 850 districts. In a way, one can say they are so called group who claim to be representing India’s 26% people below poverty line(BPL).

They are not normal religious terrorists. They do not get coverage in premium TV news as their struggle is not glamorous or entertaining as Mumbai attack or so. During same in Mumbai attack, on 30th November, 2008, they trapped and ambushed 39 Elite Police Commandos from Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. This news were not headlines. And they are popular in many areas.

They attack as an army. They attack in big numbers, occupy a town itself for few hours before they are beaten back by Indian Paramilitary forces.

They do not recognise Indian state. They have strong romantic appeal among many educated and intelligent youths. Many people say, they have many intellectuals and highly educated people int heir ranks.
