ULFA leaders released on bail

ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Assam), an insurgent group active in Indian state of Assam, had been fighting for independent Assam since 1979. During this period, it had got almost 80% of its top leaders arrested by Indian security forces and are lodged in Guwahati ( state Capital of Assam). But Paresh BArua, the self styled ‘commander-in-chief’ of ULFA’s military wing has been absconding and without his arrest or surrender, ULFA is considered to be powerful enough to disturb peace in Assam.

Indian government has been trying to engage ULFA for negotiation for long time now. ULFA is one of the few insurgent groups in North East India, which has not come to negotiation table with Indian government even for once. Though there have been ceasefire many times before between ULFA and Indian security forces, but there was never any negotiation between them.

Recent news says that India, along with other developing nations like China, Brazil and South Africa would be walking out of Copenhagen conference on climate change next month. This was disclosed by Indian minister for environment and forests (independent charge), Mr. Jairam Ramesh in Beijing.

This development can be seen as retaliatory measure by BASIC ( Brazil, India, South Africa and China) countries amidst report that rich nations led by Denmark are trying to set the agenda of the conference by presenting a draft containing a set of specific proposals.

This may result in interesting show down in the next month’s climate change conference. Most probably, developing nations are now asserting themselves, specially with strong economic performances by developing nations, led by China and India. While rich nations are not doing well economically.

South Africa refused VISA to Dalai Lama in March 2009 where Dalai Lama was to take part in international peace conference. Though South Africa gave reason for the refusal as it did not want to divert attention of peace conference to Tiebt issue, but the real reason was not beyond anyone’s comprehension.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) — South Africa has refused the Dalai Lama a visa to attend an international peace conference in Johannesburg this week, a presidential spokesman said. The Dalai Lama fled China in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule.

The Tibetan spiritual leader and Nobel Laureate did not receive a visa because it was not in South Africa’s interest for him to attend, said Thabo Masebe. Source.

In July 2009, UN Rights Chief refused to receive Dalai Lama in Geneva in his visit. Many view this as pressure from China.

United Nations rights chief Navi Pillay to answer whether she will receive the Dalai Lama on his visit to Geneva next week — understood as a negative answer — but welcomed her criticism of China’s “serious systemic violations of human rights” in Tibet, and her call for due process for detainees and access to international observers.
