India Army Chief faces protest in Nepal

Indian army chief, General Deepak Kapoor faced black flag during his visit to Nepal on Tuesday, 19 January 2010. It is reported that while General Kapoor arrived on Kathmandu Tribhuwan International Airport, around 1200 Maoist rebels protested against his visit for his remarks that he had some reservations about integrating Maoist rebels into Royal Nepal Army about a month ago.

Genral Kapoor made the comment at an official dinner during his Nepalese counterpart General Chatraman Singh Gurung’s India visit had led Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda to term it as India’s “naked interference” in Nepal’s internal affairs. While India is wary of Nepalese Maosists support to its home grown Naxalite insurgency.

This comment had got wide publicity and space in all media in Nepal. Indian embassy was quite late in issuing any clarification in time. Though it had later clarified that, General Kapoor was quoted with many distortion and that is not India’s official position, the damage was already done.

Most probably, there is more international politics involved in it. While it is well known that Maoists are inclined towards China and Nepalese Army were trained by Indian Army. Traditionally, India has a close relation with Nepal. But recently, China has developed good relations with Maoists which came to power after decade long armed insurgency which removed constitutional monarchy in Nepal. Recent Chinese influence in Nepal has created discomfort in New Delhi, for obvious reason.

Most probably, people of Nepal would become pawn in game power and influence between India and China. It is difficult time for people of Nepal.
