Indian PM reaches out to tribal population

by admin on November 4, 2009

Today, Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh agreed that there has been a systematic failure in giving stake to tribal people in modern India’s development. This acknowledgment is important due to recent spurt in Maoist/Naxalite violence across the Naxalite affected areas.

India’s tribal population has been living in the areas where India has discovered minerals, coals etc. So, in order to establish various industries related to these minerals, many tribal population had been relocated.

Tribal had been living in remote areas in India which has not seen any benefit of India’s growing economy, famed IT sector. In fact, many opine that, the difference between rich and poor has grown over the years instead of narrowing down.

Maoist and Naxalites are exploiting the situation and now Maoists claim that they are fighting for rights of tribal population. Tribal population has been discriminated traditionally by other communities. Though India has taken many measures to eliminate these discrimination including reservation policy, strong act against any discrimination against tribal population, but there has not been much improvement.

Recently, there was demand from many corners in India to use military against Naxalites and Maoists after Maoists killed many policemen in ambush. Indian security forces are more worried due to recent disclosure of Indian Maoists getting support in terms of arms and ammunition from foreign countries.

Naxalite movement started in 1960s in urban areas with many brilliant students joining it. Though it was brutally crushed, but it spread to tribal areas. So, presently, Maoists and Naxalite influences are visible in tribal dominated areas in India. So the reaching out to tribal population by Indian Prime Minister should be viewed as an attempt to win away them from Naxalite and Maoist influence.

Mr Singh said India had to win the battle for tribal people’s hearts.

“It cannot be said that we dealt sensitively with these issues in the past. More could be done and more should be done.”

I will be interesting to see, what steps now government of India takes for uplifting tribal population.

The news :

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has told chief ministers from 29 Indian states to end exploitation of tribal people. Speaking at a conference in Delhi, Mr Singh said there had been a “systematic failure” to give tribal people a stake in India’s modern economy.
He said this was fomenting discontent, making them vulnerable to Maoists. Source.
