It is reported that Arbinda Rajkhowa, the chairman of ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Assam) in Bangladesh on 1st Dec 2009. ULFA was established in April 1979 at historic Sibsagar by Arbinda Rajkhowa, Paresh Barua and many other Assamese youths to liberate Assam from India and they have been operating various terrorist activities since.

ULFA Leader arrested
Indian Army started operation against ULFA in 1989 which was preceded by dismissing AGP ( Assam Gana Parishad). It is rumoured that, the dismissal and subsequent Army action was followed by ULFA’s large scale extortion notice to various tea estates in upper Assam.
As Indian forces kept continuous pressure on ULFA, recently, they were on the run. But many believe, ULFA still commands support in various parts of Assam. But recently, ts support base was waning as its leaders were reported to be hiding in Bangladesh, and influx of Bangladeshi in Assam is an emotive issue. Also, reported links of ULFA with ISI and other ‘jehadi’ outfits did not help.
Recent arrest of Arabinda Rajkhowa is under controversy. Though it is reported that, Arbinda Rajkhowa has been handed over to Indian authorities by Bangladesh, but Indian authorities are neither confirming of the arrest or denying it. It is speculated that, Indian authorities are inclined to declare this as surrender to push for peace talk with ULFA. Also, two groups of ULFA caders belonging to one of the most potent striking formation of ULFA unilaterally chose to come overground for talks.
ULFA’s sef styled C-in-C, Paresh Barua is reportedly left Bangladesh and is hiding in China now. This may be one of the reasons why Indian government is not making the arrest public. Paresh Barua still has many followers in ULFA. So ULFA is not finished yet.
But this is major success for India. Assam was one of the most prosperous state when India gained independence. Still, Dibrugarh is the second largest revenue circle in India after Mumbai. But for various reasons, it is now one of the poorest states in India and not much of Indian famed economic revolution reaching there.
Here is the news :
Guwahati, Dec 3 (IANS) In a move aimed at buying peace in restive Assam, the Indian government might consider giving safe passage to Arabinda Rajkhowa, chairman of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), instead of describing him as arrested.
Big blow to ULFA; Rajkhowa held in Bangladesh
‘Rajkhowa could be provided safe passage by the Indian government for using his services for furthering peace talks with New Delhi and hence (the government is) not spelling out his details, including whether he has been arrested or he surrendered or is just with Indian authorities on his own,’ an intelligence official said.
