Maoists in Bihar recently not only killed 10 policemen in an encounter with with Bihar Police, but also captured four of them alive after a six-hour-long gunfight in a forested area of Bihar’s Lakhisarai district, police said Monday, 30th August 2010.

While massive search and rescue operation has been launched by Police, one body of captured Police has been recovered. Maoists have been demanding release of their eight arrested comrades in return for the captured police men.

Maoists claim that they had attacked and killed Bihar Police in retaliation to killing of their leader Azad along with a reporter in Andhra Pradesh few weeks back. The death of Azad has created quite controversy while Mamta Banerjee, TMC ( Trinamul Congress) Chief and Cabinet Railway Minister has recently demanded high level probe into the Azad killing.

It may be mentioned that, Bihar is going to polls later in this year and all political parties are trying not to anger Maoists, it seems.

India is considering deploying its nuclear-capable ballistic missiles in the North-East close to its border with China in an apparent attempt to enhance its military preparedness. India faced a humiliating defeat in 1962 border war in the hands of China.

The move comes close on the release of a report by Pentagon, which suggested that China has moved its new advanced longer range CSS-5 missiles close to its border with India and developed contingency plans to shift airborne forces to the region at short notice.

Why we should worry about China’s defence budget

The government is considering the deployment of the 2,000 km range Agni-II and 350 km range Prithvi III surface-to-surface ballistic missiles close to the Chinese border, Defence Ministry sources said in New Delhi.

The sources said that additional land was being procured by the Army in North-West Bengal and adjoining states for deployment of these missiles.

In the recent months, India is focussed on upgrading its military infrastructure in the North-Eastern sector to counter any Chinese threat.

The measures taken by the government include the deployment of two squadrons of the Su-30 MKI fighter jets in Tezpur and Chhabua in Assam and raising of two mountain divisions for deployment in Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining areas.

Bihar ( a state in Eastern India) chief minister has stated that, Maoists are part of our society! While many may feel this statement to be appeasing masses as the state election is nearing in Bihar, but it may have some truth in it. Most probably, that explains why there are many highly educated urban youths are found to be in Maoists ranks!

‘Naxal elements are a part of our society even though they have been misled into following the path of violence,’ Nitish Kumar said in his address at the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with chief ministers of Maoist-affected states.

‘Enforcement action alone leads to wider alienation, making heroes out of the leaders of the extremist organisations and leads to only symptomatic treatment, leaving the underlined disease to reappear in a more virulent form,’ he said.

The chief minister said leftwing extremism should be tackled through ‘sustained development but this needs the centre’s supportive approach to states like Bihar’.

He advocated an ‘integrated approach’ between states to deal with the problem.

He said that central government was not cooperating with his government over the demands for more paramilitary troopers.

‘Bihar has not received the requisite support from the central government,’ he said.

After series of setback to government of India in massacre of its CRPF jawans by Maoists in forests in Chattishgarh, Andhra Police finally killed one of the top leaders of Maoist, Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad ina n encounter in Adilabad, Andhra Pradesh as per reports.

While, in the expected line, Maoists are claiming that, Azad was captured in Nagpur and killed in ‘fake encounter’, but this is a success by Government of India. It has been able to capture few top Maoist leaders recently.

The body of Azad, a senior member of the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee who was killed in an encounter in Adilabad district on Friday, was today cremated at Punjagutta crematorium in Hyderabad in the presence of his family members and a large number of people including Maoist sympathisers and revolutionary poets- Varavara Rao and Kalyan Rao.

In a statement, the the CPI (Maoist) alleged that Azad was “murdered” by intelligence agencies of the Centre and Andhra Pradesh government.

Hailing Azad, who was the Maoist spokesman, it said he has become the “mind and soul of Indian revolution through his consistent and efficient work” and vowed to avenge his death.

Naxalites guerillas ambushed a team of security personnel in the restive Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh, killing at least 26 jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and injuring over a dozen others on 30th June 2010.

The incident took place at about 3 pm in Jharaghati area between Dhaurai and Gawadi, about 250 km south-west from here.

A senior official in the police headquarters here said that about 70 jawans of the 39th battalion of CRPF left the Dhaurai police station this morning for road opening duty. As the jawans reached the spot, the rebels opened indiscriminate fire at them. The CRPF jawans who were accompanied by the Special Task Force and Special Police Officers took the position and returned fire after suffering heavy casualty.

The senior police officials here confirmed the death of 26 jawans and said the toll could go up as many jawans injured in the attack were in critical condition.

This is the second biggest attack on the CRPF that had been deployed in the Naxal-infested areas to combat the red army. On April 6, the rebels ambushed a CRPF party in Dantewada district, killing 75 jawans in the biggest Naxal attack on the security personnel in the country.

Naxalites are killing CRPF men at will almost. While Indian Government looks like it has no clue how to tackle Naxalites threat to the country.

Ending after months of speculation, Cabinet Committee on Security ( CCS), Indian Union Government has said that Indian Army will not be used against Naxals. The Centre and states will, instead, recruit ex-servicemen — including retired sappers for de-mining exercises — on contractual basis to fill the gap and will focus on strengthening paramilitary and police personnel through intensive training and recruitment programmes. Role of armed forces will only be limited to “training”.

This is a good news for Army which is already fighting insurgencies in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in North East India for long time now. If it was to be used against Naxals, it would have ended up fighting India’s own large populations.
“While a couple of states are already doing this, remaining ones will also be asked to recruit retired armed force personnel for de-mining exercises and other security duties on minimum three years contract,” the official said. The committee decided that the Centre would provide adequate funds to states for this purpose as well as for recruiting regular police personnel and increasing number of police stations in Naxal-hit districts.

Since the defence ministry argued that IAF could not spare a more helicopters to ferry troops, the CCS explored the option of hiring choppers from Pawan Hans for emergency duties including evacuation of injured personnel.

Moe than 44 people died which includes many civilians among dead in a deadly blast triggered by Maoists in Dantewada, Chattishgarh on Monday, 17th May 2010. The incident took place barely after a month when Maoists massacred 76 CRPF in the same district.

The Maoists triggered an improvised explosive device (IED) on a black-top road at Chingavaram between Dantewada and Sukma as the bus winded through a 40-km stretch of dense forest. The massive explosion, which left a 10-feet deep crater, took place within two days of Maoist spokesman Azad issuing a statement — first reported in TOI — congratulating the Maoist `army’ for “wiping out 80 CRPF mercenaries” and promising more such attacks.

Dantewada SP Amaresh Mishra and a few other police officers had a providential escape as they crossed the stretch about 10 minutes before the incident. Rescue operations were on till late in the evening with teams from Kirandul reaching the spot with gas-cutters and searchlights. “Bodies are lying trapped, these have to be extricated,” said a source in Dantewada.

Chhattisgarh home minister Ram Vichar Netam said, “Our jawans were in the bus. It seems the bus was targeted because of the jawans, although the number of civilians inside it was higher.” It’s learnt there were around 32 civilians and 18 SPOs in the bus. The SPOs are tribals — belonging to Salwa Judum — who assist the police in fighting the Maoists.

Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist of group of 10 terrorists who had kept Mumbai as hostage for more than 55 hours on 26 November 2008, sentenced to death after convicting in 80 charges which includes murder, waging war against state, among others.

The 23-year-old from a village in Pakistan’s Punjab broke down as Special Judge M.L. Tahaliyani read out the sentence.

“To be hanged by the neck till death,” the judge said after each of the four counts for which he sent Kasab to the gallows. The court said there was no chance of Kasab reforming. This man had lost the right of getting humanitarian benefit, the judge said. The judge said Kasab was a menace to society; he wanted to be a terrorist and he joined the LeT on his own account and not by any coercion.

Tahaliyani said the common man would lose faith in the court if Kasab was given life. “The death sentence is required,” he said as he wound up his statement and added that Kasab did not have the right to live.

MUMBAI: Pakistani national Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone gunman captured alive during the Mumbai terror attack, was on Thursday sentenced to death by a special court, which ruled that he did not have any right to live. He has been given death on four counts, including waging war against India, murder and indulging in terrorist activities.

Kasab, who was convicted on 86 counts, was also sentenced to life imprisonment on five counts. Source.

Ranjan Daimari alias DR NABALA, chief of national democratic front of Bodoland ( NDFB), and outlawed insurgent group of Assam, India has been arrested by Bangladesh police and handed over Indian authorities, as per recent report.

Guwahati, May 2: Ranjan Daimary, the man behind Assam’s most terrifying blasts, is behind bars, raising hopes that the government’s attempts at restoring peace in the Bodo belt by initiating talks with a faction of his outfit may finally pay off.

Daimary, alias D.R. Nabla, the 50-year-old founder of the National Democratic Front of Boroland, was handed over by Bangladesh authorities to the BSF at Dawki in Meghalaya yesterday.

With the top leader now in custody, a move by the government to get him to the negotiating table is on the cards.

The plan is prompted by the government’s belief that Daimary’s faction is too potent a force for the government to be able to bring lasting peace to Bodo areas without his participation in the talks.

“Sooner or later we need him to join the ongoing peace process between the Centre and the NDFB to bring permanent peace in the state in general, and in Bodo belt in particular,” a police source said.

“Though the Centre has already begun a dialogue with a faction of the NDFB, any talks without the Daimary faction is unlikely to ensure lasting peace, as a section of armed NDFB cadres are under his control and they still have a nuisance value,” he said.

Around 150 cadres are believed to be with Daimary.

“Despite the fact that Daimary is a fugitive from justice and wanted in several cases, including the October 30 serial blasts in 2008, in the long run we need to get him involved in the peace talks at some stage so as to take it to a logical conclusion and get the desired results,” he said.
