Maoists would strike if government does not talk : Kishenji

On Saturday, Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji has threatened that they ( Maoists) would start attacking cities like Kolkota, Bhubaneswar if their offer for talk is not accepted. This seems to be retort by Maoists after chief ministers from Wes Bengal, Budhadeb Bhattacharya and Orissa, Nabin Patnaik, insisted that Operation Green Hunt be stepped up against Naxalites.

Interestingly while government has been trying to portray Naxalites as terrorist organisation killing innocent civilians randomly, the statistics show otherwise. Also most probably, this aim by government has prompted Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alas Kishenji saying, 90 percent of Adivasis can not avail government job under reservation policy. And this is what Naxalites want to portray themselves, an outfit fighting for justice for tribals and downtrodden in India.

SOMEWHERE ON THE BENGAL-JHARKHAND BORDER: The Maoists are now training their guns on big cities and Kolkata and Bhubaneswar could be among their next targets if the government does not announce talks immediately, a senior commander has warned.

The threat came from CPI (Maoist) politburo member and military commander Koteswar Rao, alias Kishanji. He served the government with an ultimatum from his jungle hideout on Saturday, threatening to strike cities and towns if it rejected their offer of talks. Source.

ULFA leaders released on bail

ULFA ( United Liberation Front of Assam), an insurgent group active in Indian state of Assam, had been fighting for independent Assam since 1979. During this period, it had got almost 80% of its top leaders arrested by Indian security forces and are lodged in Guwahati ( state Capital of Assam). But Paresh BArua, the self styled ‘commander-in-chief’ of ULFA’s military wing has been absconding and without his arrest or surrender, ULFA is considered to be powerful enough to disturb peace in Assam.

Indian government has been trying to engage ULFA for negotiation for long time now. ULFA is one of the few insurgent groups in North East India, which has not come to negotiation table with Indian government even for once. Though there have been ceasefire many times before between ULFA and Indian security forces, but there was never any negotiation between them.

Recently, Assam government has allowed its top leaders to get bail un-opposed! Many see this as conciliatory gesture by government for paving way for negotiations. ULFA’s vice chairman Pradip Gogoi and Publicity Secretary Mithinga Daimary have been granted bail by Guwahati city court. Few days ago, ULFA adviser Bhimkanta Buragohain alias MAMA was transferred to Guwahati Jail where all other ULF’s top leaders including its founder chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa are lodged.

Guwahati: Signalling the government’s keenness to give momentum to the peace overtures that it has been indulging the ULFA with, a special anti-terror court here Tuesday released on bail top commanders Pradip Gogoi and Mithinga Daimary. The banned outfit’s vice-chairman Pradip Gogoi was granted bail by the TADA court here in all six cases lodged against him paving way for his immediate release. Source.

Maoists declare 72-day ceasefire : reports

Reports says that Maoists in India has declared 72 day cease fire.

The news is on TV channels right now. But it is interesting that Maoists have declared ceasefire after few spate of attack on security forces inflicting heavy causalities. Recently, they had killed 24 EFR personals in a daring attack in West Bengal which resulted in suspension of its IG after series of events afterwords.

President Pratibha Patil too condemned Naxalites in her recent speech. According to few TV channels, the ceasefire is conditional and Naxalites want Indian government to halt their operations ( Green Hunt) too.

It will be very interesting to see how government of India reacts and also to watch new development in next few days!

Operation Peace Hunt : Naxalite retort to Operation Green hunt

Maoists numbering 60 to 70, armed with automatic rifles, ambushed security forces in Silda (just 30km from Midnapore town) on Monday, killing 21 Eastern Frontier Rifle (EFR) jawans and abducting many injured soldiers, in the most devastating and daring Naxal attack in Bengal so far, at Belpahari, West Midanpore, West Bengal.

“This is our Operation Peace Hunt against their Operation Green Hunt,” Kishanji told TOI. “This is our reply to Chidambaram and Buddhadeb. Steer clear of the jungles of Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Jharkhand.”, as per Times of India report.

It may be noted that, Indian home minister P Chidambaram launched “Operation Green Hunt” few months ago to decimate Naxalite from India’s tribal forest areas in Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa states. With this killing, Naxalites have proved, the “Operation Green Hunt” has not affected them at all and they are capable of mounting attack o Indian security forces at will.

BELPAHARI (WEST MIDNAPORE): Scores of Maoists ambushed security forces in Silda (just 30km from Midnapore town) on Monday, killing 21 Eastern Frontier Rifle (EFR) jawans and abducting many injured soldiers, in the most devastating and daring Naxal attack in Bengal so far. The camp, located in the middle of a busy market place, was completely gutted.

Clad in tracksuits and preparing dinner, around 50 EFR men were caught completely off guard when 60 to 70 Maoists began firing from automatic rifles. The jawans were boxed in by the five-foot walls and barbed wire fence of their camp as the guerrillas opened fire from all sides. Source.

Tamil Eelam dream is still ON : SL Army Chief

Despite LTTE being decimated, Tamil Eelam in Srilanka is still raging, according to Army Chief of Sri Lanka, Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya. “Even at present those who had connections with terrorists and the Tamil diaspora overseas are still discussing the possibility of establishing a state of Eelam according to information we received,” Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya has said.

When LTTE was decimated and all its top leaders were killed in May, last year, nobody believed that Tamils in Sri Lanka would stop fancying about Tamil Eelam. But everybody believed, it will not be possible for another LTTE or LTTE like organisation to come up in near future.

So, this observation by SriLankan Army chief may be interesting to note. It may me mentioned that, General Fonseka, who played crucial role in defeating LTTE, resigned after few months. He was recently arrested after presidential election in Sri Lanka.

There has been great deal of talking on Indo-Pak talks recently. One would be surprised to know that, no matter what would be the outcome of the talk, the talk itself generates much debate. One would be amazed to see talks on the talk like this:-
“It is India which blinks on Indo-Pak talks”, says Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi just hours after India proposes secretary level talks! Also, it is interesting, Indian media picks up those lines and promptly put them on their headlines!

Such is the talk on Indo-Pak talks!

It can be mentioned that, Pakistan has been pressing India for resumption of talks for long time now which was suspended by India soon after 26 Nov 2008 attack on Mumbai by Pakistan based terrorists.

ISLAMABAD: Hours after India proposed dates for foreign secretary-level talks, Pakistan has claimed that it was New Delhi which had blinked not Islamabad. Pakistan foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that it was India which had talked about breaking their “relationship” with us and their turning their back on us.

“But two days ago, India has approached and said they want to sit and talk to us and want to resume their relationship with us,” Qureshi told a public meeting in Multan in Punjab on Sunday. Source.

Amar Singh Expelled from SP, finally

Amar Singh along with actress-turned-politician Jaya Prada has been expelled from Samajwadi Party on Tuesday, 2nd February.

Amar Singh has reacted that it is blessing in disguise for him.

Few weeks ago, when Amar Singh resigned from all party posts, it was almost clear that Amar Singh will no longer be part of SP.

As per report, newly appointed SP general secretary, Mohan Singh announced that Amar Singh and Jaya Prada have been expelled for ant-party activities. He termed Amar Singh’s association as “intrusion of capitalism” in socialist Samajwadi Party.

Mohan Singh said the party also suspended membership of four MLAs – Madan Chauhan, Sandeep Agarwal, Ashok Chandel and Sarvesh Singh – all Amar Singh loyalists.

“For over a month some leaders of the party have been continuously giving statements against the SP,” Singh said.

He said that on January 31, Lok Sabha member Jaya Prada had held a press conference in which she made “indecent comments” against the SP leadership and spit venom against its policies.

“She also gave statements in support of Kalyan Singh, which the party thought had dented its secular image. Any leader, howsoever important, he or she cannot be allowed to make public statements against any political party,” he said.

It may be mentioned that film star Sanjay Dutt had resigned from SP as soon as Amar SIngh resigned earlier. Most probably, with exit of Amar Singh from SP, almost all regional parties in India have become single person-single family parties!

Human Rights violation in Manipur : NHRC asks for reports

What may be the first of its kind, National Human Rights Commission, India has asked Manipur (North Eastern insurgency infested state in India) government to submit report on 111 police encounters in Manipur state. As per report, an NGO, Asian Center for Human Rights had filed written complaint of human rights violation to the NHRC ( National Human Rights Commission) a day after R.K. Sanjoaba was killed by police Oct 20, 2004.

It can be mentioned that, this tiny state of India to the North East of Delhi, around 2600 KM away, was a princely state under British India and was made part of present day India in October 1949. It was made a union territory in 1956 and became a full fledged stat in 1972. It has border with Myanmar ( Previoulsy Burma).

Insurgency started in Manipur after 1970. Presently, Manipur has highest number of insurgent groups among all Indian North-Eastern states.

With imposition of Armed Forces Special Act 1959, this state has witnessed many human rights violations. The number of 111 police encounters for which NHRC has asked report may sound staggering, but in reality, the human rights violation may be many more, by both Indian Armed Forces as well as insurgent groups. Irom Chanu Sharmila is one of the most famous activist against AFSPA and has been fasting since 4 November 2000.

Justice in Bangladesh

Finally, convicted killers of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was the founding president of Bangladesh, were hanged at 1AM on 27th January 2010. Mr Rahman was killed in 1975, just four years after leading Bangladesh to independence from Pakistan.

March 1971: Sheikh Mujibur announces breakaway from East Pakistan and establishment of Bangladesh
August 1975: Sheikh Mujibur is killed in a coup
November 1998: Dhaka court orders execution of 15 for his killing. Three later acquitted
Oct 2001: Trial halts after Khaleda Zia elected prime minister
August 2007: Sheikh Mujibur’s murder case resumes
November 2009: Supreme Court rejects appeals by five ex-army officers accused of killing
January 2010: Supreme Court dismisses five ex-army officers’ final appeals

It was a sad story that Mr. Rahman was killed within four years after he led creation of Bangladesh after separating from Pakistan. His party won majority seats in Pakistan election but was not allowed to become Prime Minister of Pakistan by then West Pakistani leaders. This resulted in massive protest in East Pakistan which West Pakistanis tried to suppress with massive use of armed forces. This started desertion by many East Pakistani men in Pakistan Army and joined Mr. Rahman for Bangladesh independence struggle.

India was also involved in Pakistan’s internal turmoil as massive influx of refugees came from Bangladesh. It resulted in 1971 war between India and Pakistan where Pakistan forces surrendered in Dhaka in December 1971 and, independent Bangladesh was born.

French Parliament Calls for ban on Burqa : Reports

Recent report says that French parliament has called for total ban on “Burqa” ( islamic veil that covers women from head to toe). The parliament report says that Burqa is a affront to French values and called on to ban in all public school, public transport, hospitals, government offices etc. French values do not tolerate this excess on women, it adds.

After six months of hearings, the panel of 32 lawmakers recommended a ban on the face-covering veil in all state-run institutions and offices, the broadest move yet to restrict Muslim dress in France. “The wearing of the full veil is the tip of the iceberg,” said communist lawmaker Andre Gerin, the chair of the commission. “There are scandalous practices hidden behind this veil,” said Gerin who vowed to fight the “gurus” seeking to export a racial brand of fundamentalism and sectarianism to France.

There has been debate in French for last few years about any kind of veil in public places. French also banned turban in schools few years back. This is an interesting development again where French parliament has come out with string message against Islamic practice of “Burqa” which is a must for any women who follow religion Islam.

It would be interesting to note how other Islamic nations like Arab countries, Taliban Iran etc reacts and responds to this report.

PARIS: A French parliament report called on Tuesday for a ban on the full Islamic veil in all schools, hospitals, public transport and government offices, saying the burqa was an affront to French values. President Nicolas Sarkozy set the tone for the debate in June when he declared the burqa “not welcome” in France and described it as a symbol of women’s “subservience” that cannot be tolerated in a country that considers itself a human rights leader.
