Hate Speech, Varun Gandhi, LP Yadav, Election Campaign India

by admin on April 8, 2009

Election campaign in India has always been exciting and eventful. This time, there is not a single poll issue which is being used by any of the major political parties.

Recently, Varun Gandhi, the BJP candidate from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, has been making news for soem Hate Speech. As he has got media coverage, many leaders are taking cue from him. Either they are trying to make some hate speech like him, either by opposing him or supporting him. Mr. L P Yadav, who is a part of UPA, but contesting against his other UPA allies, has tried to give equal hate speech like Varun Gandhi, and got himself on media headlines too.

But with slapping NSA on Varun Gandhi for hate speech against a particular community has been quite surprising. Most probably, it is minority appeasement at its best, but it can also send out a wrong message. Speaking out in defence of majority community is considered as attack on India, hence threat to the nation.

This is the first time regional smaller parties are setting terms for alliance for national parties. Be it Congress or BJP, they have no choice but to agree to their regional allies. This may not be a good sign for India as a country. In my opinion, India should have at least one strong National Party. Presently, the two major political parties, Congress and BJP, lacks presence in few parts of the country. For example, Congress is almost absent in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. While BJP is almost absent in Kerala, Tamil Nud, West Bengal.

The controversy over election commissioners ahead of election was also not in good taste. Also, open support by both BJP and Congress for particular EC may not be good for free and fair election.
