Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31 Oct 1984

Today is 31st October and on this day, 1984, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

On 31 October 1984, two of Gandhi’s bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, both Sikhs, assassinated her with their service weapons in the garden of the Prime Minister’s Residence at No. 1, Safdarjung Road in New Delhi. As she was walking to be interviewed by the British actor Peter Ustinov, who was filming a documentary for Irish television, she passed a wicket gate guarded by Satwant and Beant. According to information available immediately following the incident, Beant Singh shot her three times using his side-arm and Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds,[27] using a Sten submachine gun. Beant Singh was shot dead and Satwant Singh was shot and arrested by her other bodyguards.

It is strange that, she was killed by her own body guards. Many Indian called her iron lady. She was notorious for imposing India’s only emergency in 1975. She was hailed as ‘Durga’, great Indian Goddess, for defeating Pakistan in 1971.

Many accuses her of starting sycophancy in Indian Politics. She was hailed as India is Indira and Indira is India by D K Barua, thn Congress president. Present ruling party Congress is known as Congress I where I stands for Indira.

On this day, I pay homage to her as I liked her slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’, remove poverty.

The day was when i was only in standard 6 and i was in my village a remote villege in oDisha. The whole villege was shocked and mourning. Every one is saying that they lost Indira Maa (Mother Indira). Though lots of people critise her but actually she was a leader who touched the heart of millions of poor people.
