So, finally, it has become now official that United States diplomats are being harassed selectively by various security agencies ( ISI as many claim) in Pakistan. The harassment has increased so much that US ambassador to Pakistan has openly accused Pakistan establishments of harassing US diplomats in Pakistan.

The harassment includes checking of lower rank US consulate officers, employees at security check points, unnecessary delay in issuing VISA to diplomats or non renewal of visa to employees of US consulate in Pakistan.

The United States Embassy in Pakistan complained publicly Thursday that its staff members were being harassed and detained as they traveled around the country, a rare public protest reflecting the tensions as America expanded its presence here. American officials say they need to expand the embassy staff to help disburse $7.5 billion in aid to Pakistan. But many Pakistanis believe that the United States is bringing in spies to destabilize the country and to take over its nuclear program. Source.

Most probably, the recent American pressure on Pakistan to act against Taliban is taking its toll! Taliban and other jehadi forces have always been useful cards for Pakistan in its international diplomatic game-plan. But now in the name of “war on terror”, it is not only siding America, but also fighting the same Jehadi forces which they have trained, funded before! Also, ambassador of US does not complaint of getting their staff harassed in Pakistan does not happen daily!

It will be interesting to observe future development on relations between USA and Pakistan as USA is itching to mount attack in Pakistan with its drones while Pakistan has major reservation about it due to mounting opposition by its population against presence of US forces in its land. Pakistan is having almost regular bomb blasts now a days after it has started operations against Taliban.

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran announced plans on Sunday to build 10 new uranium enrichment plants in a major expansion of its atomic program, just two days after the U.N. nuclear watchdog rebuked it for carrying out such work in secret.
The defiant move by hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government will further aggravate tensions between the Islamic Republic and major powers over Iranian nuclear activities. Source.

The White House, office of US president condemned it on expected line. So does British foreign office. At one end, North Korea is not defying world concern about its nuclear ambition and at the other end, Iran is now openly going ahead with its nuclear weapon program. Most probably, Iran may have achieved and gathered enough weapon grade uranium for making nuclear weapon.

Recent news says that India, along with other developing nations like China, Brazil and South Africa would be walking out of Copenhagen conference on climate change next month. This was disclosed by Indian minister for environment and forests (independent charge), Mr. Jairam Ramesh in Beijing.

This development can be seen as retaliatory measure by BASIC ( Brazil, India, South Africa and China) countries amidst report that rich nations led by Denmark are trying to set the agenda of the conference by presenting a draft containing a set of specific proposals.

This may result in interesting show down in the next month’s climate change conference. Most probably, developing nations are now asserting themselves, specially with strong economic performances by developing nations, led by China and India. While rich nations are not doing well economically.

BEIJING: In an unprecedented move, India on Saturday joined China and two other developing countries to prepare for a major offensive on rich nations at the Copenhagen conference on climate change next month.

The four countries, which include Brazil and South Africa, agreed to a strategy that involves jointly walking out of the conference if the developed nations try to force their own terms on the developing world, Jairam Ramesh, the Indian minister for environment and forests (independent charge), said. Major Nidal Malik Hasan is a psychiatrist with US Army. And he is accused recently of killing 13 people and injuring28 people in a US military base Fort Hood, Tex.

He was born and brought up ( reared as many news paper mentioned) in Virginia, USA. His parents were first generation immigrants from small town Palestiniannear Jerusalem. He joined Army after his high school opposing his parents. Then Army put him through colleges as he became a psychiatrist doctor.

Ironically, he consulted many military personal who came back from war in Afghanistan. Many people think Major Nidal committed the shoot out due to stress of watching his fellow Muslims killed in war as well as he might have got many stories, or hate stories by his patients coming back from Afghanistan.

This is a serious incident worth taking a note, at a time when USA in midst of bloody war on terror against Taliban, Al Qaida, all Muslim terrorist organisations. Many think, Major Nidal committed this act due to fear of posting in war front. But real truth may be otherwise too.

Most probably, if Major Nidal was not a Muslim, this incident would have passed as a stress related incidence. But Major Nidal being single and Muslim have made the news an international headlines.

Afghanistan is a very, very strange country. It has long history of war. Right from Chengij Khan and till recently the American. The country, Afghanistan, has been a battle field for everyone. Just to list few famous great warriors who have come to Afghanistan and fought wars:-

1. Alexander The great : He came all way from Greece and fought in the areas, now in Afghanistan around 324BC.
2. Ghajnavi : Arabs came and fought wars in Afghanistan from 600 AD to 1200 AD and by that time, Afghanistan was converted to Muslims from past Buddhists and Hindus.
3. Chengij Khan : The great Mongol warlord came all the way from Mongolia and fought wars in Afghanistan. And finally he went back without ruling this country. But he inflicted heavy loss of human lives and properties all around Afghanistan. Mongols terror lasted for almost 300 years from 1200 to 1500 AD.
4. After 1500 AD, no such foreign invasion took place, as during this period the whole world saw some peace. Industrial revolution caused Europeans dominate world market.
5. After the British captured whole of India in 1800AD, they came to Afghanistan and fought many wars. But they never could rule the country as it did whole of India.
6. After world war II, and at the height of cold war, Russian Army entered Afghanistan and started fighting with locals. They too left after 10 years of fruitless fight in 1989.
7. After Soviet Russia left, USA ( United States of America) moved in around 2003 and they are still fighting.

So, all world power come to Afghanistan to fight few wars for some reason or the other. And people from Afghanistan is fighting generation after generation.

Recent developments at various places see India and China coming face to face as adversaries. Many incidences have taken place in last few months which portray these two big Asian countries with world’s largest population with mutual distrust and antagonism.

Indo-China Face Off

The few incidences I can remember are:

1. Chinese products banned in India

India banned Chinese dairy products in September, 2008 allegedly contaminated with deadly whitener. Few other countries in Asia and Africa too banned Chinese diary products including Singapore, Australia. India also banned Chinese Mobile and toys. Recently, when India imposes ban on dairy products again as the ban was coming to a end on 24th June 2009, China protested against it. The ban was lifted by Singapore and few other countries after Chinese products passed laboratory tests.

India also banned toys imported from China as well as mobile phones. And recently China threatened tit for tat to Indian products.

2. China tries to stall ADB loan to India

China tried to block India’s ADB(Asian Development Bank) loan as the loans were meant for infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh, an Indian state and China claims its own. This is a clear departure of previous Chinese stand on Arunachal Pradesh. Previously, it claimed part of Arunachal Pradesh as its South Tibet territory and now it claims whole of Arunachal Pradesh. Few war of words between foreign ministries followed :-

“We value our ties with China but blocking the loan at Asian Development Bank (ADB) was outrageous,” Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor told.

“China has expressed strong discontent. The action can neither change the fact that China and India have a huge territorial controversy, nor China’s fundamental position on the border issues between China and India,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman told a news conference on June 18.

3. Indian deploys Air Superior Fighter Jets in North East India

India has recently deployed 2 squadrons of Sukhoi-30 MKI in Northeast India. India claims it is response to Chinese build up in Tibet. China cries fouls and increases its demand over Arunachal Pradesh which is administered by India but claimed by China. Capable of carrying nuclear weapons and tailor-made for Indian

specifications, the Su-30 MKI is a variant of the Sukhoi Su-30 and is jointly-developed by Russia`s Sukhoi Corporation and India`s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the IAF, said the report.

China fumes over this deployment and protests.

4. Recent Chinese Diplomacy in Sri Lanka

Recent Chinese contract to build a port in Sri Lanka has left India redfaced and Chinese circling of India is complete. China has huge assets in Pakistan, Myanmar and now in Sri Lanka.

5. Recent Chinese Intrusion

China has started increasingly intruding Indian border as per reports. This clearly is aggression against India and India is more than happy to retaliate now.

India and China fought a war in 1962 over boundary dispute which led to humiliating Indian defeat. Now that antagonism has come out in the open which was under “Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai” garb, both India and China may not go to war again. They have these options:-

1. India has Dalai Lama trump card. With many devout Buddhist Followers in the west with celebrities like Richard Gere, India can play Tibet card against China.

2. China can instigate more insurgency in troubled North East and this can be a real headache for India.

3. China can play up Pakistan card against India. With US with no strategic and clear Asian policy with the new president, Barack Obama, China can surely try to isolate India.

Whatever it is, it surely not good for both the countries. USA and Japan will be more than willing to fish in these troubled water.

Recently, ( on Monday, 22 June 2009), President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy said that “Burqa is not welcome in France,because it is not a symbol of religion but a sign of subservience for women”. A quick information, France has the largest Muslim population in Europe after Turkey. France has also banned all religious attire in schools.

Opposing Islamic dress code “Burqa” is not new in Europe. British Politician Jack Straw also requested his citizens from his constituency to meet him without Burqa in 2006 creating a media furore. So, one can say controversy about Burqa in Europe is nothing new.

But recent Sorkozy statement has created quite a news again. There has been many arguments and counter arguments for Burqa. Many Muslims also agrees that wearing Burqa is Arab culture and can not be termed as Muslim culture. But many argue that singling out Muslim women for covering their faces while Christian nuns too wear similar dress is “prejudiced”.

VERSAILLES (FRANCE): The burqa is “not welcome” in France because it is not a symbol of religion but a sign of subservience for women, President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Monday.
“We cannot accept to have in our country women who are prisoners behind netting, cut off from all social life, deprived of identity,” he said. “That is not the idea that the French republic has of women’s dignity.”
“The burqa is not a sign of religion, it is a sign of subservience,” he told lawmakers. “It will not be welcome on the territory of the French republic.” Source.

In recently concluded election in Iran, on 12th June 2009, the incumbent, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won in big margin against his opponent Mir Hussein Moussavi. But since the result was declared, there has been lot of protest going accusing the ruling party of rigging the election.

People of Iran has been widely using internet as medium of protest and Twitter has been used to syncronize as well and exchange messages among protesters. This is a significant development in Iran, a country which western media portrays as a regressive government and western governments accuse of developing weapons of mass destruction (WMD) aimed at western world.

USA is trying to exploit the situation and as usual trying to intervene the political situation there. Here is the report :

TEHRAN — Tens of thousands of protesters massed in central Iran again Wednesday to demonstrate against the disputed presidential election, as the government expanded its crackdown on journalists to try to block their coverage of opposition activities.
The protesters, reached by telephone, described marching silently down a major thoroughfare, some holding photographs of the main opposition candidate in Friday’s vote, Mir Hussein Moussavi. Others lifted their bare hands high in the air, signifying their support for Mr. Moussavi with green ribbons tied around their wrists or holding their fingers in a victory sign. Source.

In other part of the world, North Korea has threatened USA of taking military action against it if provoked. “North Korea warned on Wednesday of a “thousand-fold” military retaliation against the US and its allies if provoked, the latest threat in its drumbeat of rhetoric in defense of its rogue nuclear program.” While China and Russia expresses deep concern over the developments in North Korea and urged North Korea to come to negotiating table.

One might be surprised that North Korea is threatening military action against USA while till now USA used to threaten other nations with military actions. But those who are following North Korea and politics in Korean peninsula, China, Japan and Russia will not be surprised with these development. China is solidly behind North Korea as USA is behind Isreal.

For the first time in history, Isreal has in principle agreed for Palestine State alongside Isreal. Isreal has always been opposing Palestine state and Palestine Issue could be the longest and most reported conflict in the world! It has resulted many wars between Isreal and Arab countries. Wikipedia has a fairly long documentation on it!

On June 14, 2009, Netanyahu, leader of the conservative party Likud Party, the Prime Minister of Isreal, gave a half an hour long speech to his nation, which was broadcast, “In this small land of ours, two peoples live freely, side-by-side, in amity and mutual respect. Each will have its own flag, its own national anthem, its own government. Neither will threaten the security or survival of the other.”

This is in response to Barack Obama’s famous June 4 speech in Cairo to Arab world and the change in stance by Isreal is seen as a result of immense American pressure. But this may well be a solution to the vexed issue which has claimed many lives so far and Isreal has been living on edge. I sincerely wish, this good will and compromise should be accepted and taken further by conflicting parties in good spirit. Most probably, this can be the start of end of the Isreal-Arab conflict or Jew-Muslim war, as many people like to call.
